A name with local roots
The soldier the nearby fort was renamed for was born in this county.
Fort Lee, renamed in July 2025, now honors Pvt. Fitz Lee of the 10th Cavalry — a Buffalo Soldier and Medal of Honor recipient born in Dinwiddie in 1866. The post itself sits just over the line in Prince George, but the namesake is Dinwiddie's own.

Five Forks and the Petersburg breakthrough are both here.
The Union victory at Five Forks on 1 April 1865 forced the evacuation of Petersburg and Richmond the next day — the National Park Service calls it the breaking point of Lee's army. Pamplin Historical Park, 647 acres, preserves where the final breakthrough happened the day after.
